Farm House Il Fienile di Orazio Rieti
The Sabina area of Lazio is a well-kept secret: only an hour’s drive north of Rome, but with fantastic scenery and cuisine easily comparable to its betterknown neighbours, Tuscany and Umbria.
The idiosyncratic, gentle and well thought-out website is a good introduction to Mauro and his wife Ornella’s style and attention to detail.
The property consists of a beautiful renovated stone farmhouse and converted hayloft. It’s well off the beaten track, with stunning views over a landscape of wooded hills and olive groves. It is a good base for exploring Sabina area. Mauro and Ornella put on events throughout the year, including camping for kids, astronomy evenings, and trekking in the surrounding hills.
Meals are served either outside in the garden or on the lower floor of the converted hay-loft, which has been made into a cosy dining room.
The food was fantastic: our group were all vegetarians and Ornella provided wonderful dinner (including local sheep’s cheeses, homemade bread, homemade mostardes, fresh pasta with beans from the garden, spaghetti frittata, and pear and chocolate torta; plus! wine from the farm’s own vines).
The Fienile has good leisure facilities as a small pool, a bocce pitch, mountain bikes and extensive grounds providing lots of opportunity to wander, or just sit in a hammock and read. The guest rooms are simply furnished but cosy with high ceilings and exposed beams, and there is a shared terrace where you can sit and admire the view.
All in all a wonderful discovery: friendly people, excellent value, and a very peaceful and relaxing place to stay.

Where we are
We are at Monte San Giovanni in Sabina, in the little village of Missiani, a place that isn’t just Sabina and isn’t just Alto Lazio, but a mixture of both.
Rieti is 18 kilometers away and Rome 86 kilometers.
