Trentino Alto Adige is the most northern Italian region and is completely mountainous.

To the north, towards the Austrian border, along the line from Reschenpass to Passo di Monte Croce di Comelico, lie the Tyrolean Alps (analyzed in Vinschgau / Val Venosta Alps, Breonie, and Aurine Pusteria), which reach their maximum height in Weisskugel / Weisskugel (3764 m). In the Ahr Valley, the Summit of Italy / Glockenkarkopf (2911 m asl) is the northernmost point in the country.

In the western part of Trentino-Alto Adige rise the Ortles-Cevedale (with the Ortles / Ortler, the highest peak of the region, 3902 m asl), Presanella and Adamello-Brenta Dolomites.

Both the Trentino Alto Adige, which are affected by the western section of the Dolomites (Dolomiti di Sesto, Group Puez, Odle, Sciliar Sassolungo, Rosengarten, Marmolada, Gruppo Sella, Latemar, Pale di San Martino), while going towards the south degrade the mountain slopes in the Alpine foothills.

Trentino-Alto Adige is rich in water courses (among the largest: The Alto Adige by tributaries Passer, Isarco with its tributary Rienza, Walnut and Avis, the Brenta, the Sarca and Chiese).

Trentino extends the northern tip of Lake Garda are also numerous mountain lakes, often of small size. Among the better known, the Molveno, Lake Ledro, Lake Levico, Lake Caldonazzo, Lake Tovel Braies Lake, Lake Carezza, Kalterersee, Toblacher, Lago di Landro and Reschensee.

There are several areas prottette, covering about one fifth of the territory of the region. In the region there is a national park (Parco Nazionale dello Stelvio) and 10 provincial parks (8 of which extend in the Province of Bolzano).


SPA - Special Protection Areas
These are, as regards the Trentino-Alto Adige, the sites of Special Protection Areas.
The areas - defined in Special Protection Areas, and often referred to by the acronym SPA - have been proposed on the basis of the Decree 25/3/2005 - published in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic n. 168 dell'21 July 2005 - prepared by the Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea under Directive 79/409/EEC.
